Selau-Suir communities celebrated the global ‘Sixteen days of activism to end violence against women and children.
Office of the Member for Selau-Suir Constituency Hon Paul Otto Cheung, chairladies of Selau Community Government Maria Stevenson, Suir Community Government Petronella Takinsi, President of Selau Suir District Womens Federation Marama Agnes Soahoehi, North Open seat rep Jocelyn Nakin, Peit Constituency chairlady and Kokopau Urban Chairlady Elizabeth Tako Palin were present at the occasion.
Sr Lorraine Garasu said PNG celebrated twenty days of activism which included international children’s day on the Nov 21st, 2022.
‘In PNG since the 25th of November, theme: Unite Activism to End Violence Against Women and Girls and in Bougainville theme: From Safe Homes to a Safer PNG and Bougainville Unite for Peace and Human Rights,’ she said.
Sr Garasu said to address these issues we must;
1.Educate ourselves about the cause roots of violence
2.Eradicate female suppression in home and workplace
3.Be critical ask questions like why wife-beating, rape & incest
She added we must stop blaming the victim.
Sr Garasu said she is aware of the cases of violence from Selau, Suir and Tinputz every month.
‘The statistics are alarming and to date we have recorded over 40 to 50,000 cases throughout Bougainville from, South, Central and North regions,’ she added. ENDS///AK
