130622 AUTONOMY WAY FORWARD FOR EAST NEW BRITAIN SAYS GOVERNOR
NEW DAWN FM NEWS
The Governor for East New Britain, HON NAKIKUS KONGA says Autonomy was the way forward for East New Britain to raise the much-needed monies to meet its fiscal self-reliance.
MR. KONGA who is defending his seat this election told reporters at a News Conference at the Kerevat market in East New Britain last Saturday, that under autonomy the province can have the power to raise its own funds to deliver much needed services to its people.
He said currently the province was making 40 million kina but under autonomy funds can increase to at least FOUR HUNDRED MILLION KINA.
MR.KONGA said that this was the reason he has joined the PNC party this election because PNC under PETER ONEIL had already approved Autonomy for East New Britain in 2018.
He told reporters from the National newspaper, Post Courier in Rabaul and Buka and New Dawn FM that taxes can be paid directly by companies operating in the Province to raise funds for the Province.
The Governor said under the current Provincial Government arrangement Provinces were losing out on these funds because taxes are either paid to Port Moresby or not paid at all.
Reporters met the Governor after their Election awareness training held at RAPOPO Plantation Resort hosted by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
The Governor was busy campaigning at the Kerevat market when met by the reporters as part of their assignment was to attend a Press conference and report on it.
In his talk, HON KONGA also mentioned setting up a local BANK for the people of East New Britain if given the mandate again by his people.
He said the law does not stop anyone from starting a Bank and because this is a much needed service, he would establish a Bank for the people of East New Britain with Branches in Port Moresby and East New Britain.
He said sub branches can also be established throughout the districts and growth centers in his Province.
The Governor said he was convinced this can be done because the East New Britain Provincial Savings and Loans Society has surplus funds from their operation and these only confirms that his people have learned the savings culture under the Savings and Loans Society system.
