040321CALL FOR INQUIRY INTO THE 2020 ABG RESPONSE ON COVID-19 PANDEMIC
NEW DAWN FM NEWS
The steeply increasing number of COVID-19 positive cases in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville is more life threatening than the gone Bougainville armed conflict says the former acting secretary for the Department of Peace Agreement Implementation and Freelance Peace Builder, DENNIS KUIAI.
In a press statement released today, MR, KUIAI says that the publicity of those tested and confirmed positive is more merciless than the virus.
And the silence of the Government is more frightening than the pandemic itself.
He said that the Publicity coupled by awareness will not stop the spread of the virus nor will it heal those infected. The people of Bougainville are left to struggle for own survival using their best natural instincts.
MR. KUIAI says Bougainville still has the paramount task of ensuring people’s expected outcome from the PNG/ABG Intergovernmental Consultation.
It is essentially vital that Members of our Bougainville Consultation Team as well as the people of Bougainville must be protected by our Government both through preventive and curative health from the pandemic.
He says,We need healthy leadership and people to build a healthy Independent Nation of Bougainville.
In 2020, with the declaration of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Autonomous Bougainville Government declared a State of Emergency (SOE) in March that lapsed in December 2020.
He questioned, Since then, what infrastructures and policies had been put in place?
Was the appropriated funding of more than Ten Million Kina (K10m) utilised to prepare Bougainville to respond to an outbreak?
The former Acting Secretary said that for the good of our people and our future, it is only appropriate for the President of the Autonomous Bougainville Government to call for an Inquiry into the COVID-19 State of Emergency (SOE) Management and Operations so that the people of Bougainville can be well informed of the Governments’ response strategy as for their benefit.
COVID-19 Pandemic is a health concern that involves every individual person and even the simple ordinary people in the rural villages. Therefore, Government response must be inclusive of every stakeholders, the Churches, the Civil Society Organizations, Women, Youth, and Persons with Disability as well as Media.
A Result-Based whole-of-Government Approach is needed to respond to this health pandemic.
Our Government must respond now rather than later, let us not fail our people by excuses of resources constraints as we had not prepared when we had the money in 2020.
