291218STRONG WIND WARNING STILL CURRENT

The Papua New Guinea Weather Office and the National Maritime Safety Authority reported strong wind warning to all waters of PNG and Bougainville for a further 24 hours.
The office says strong North West to North East winds are expected to blow at the speed between 20 to 34 knots and the seas could rise between 1.5 metres to 2.5metres causing rough seas and high waves.
Isolated showers and thunderstorms are also expected for the next 24 hours starting 5 am this morning.
In Buka town very strong winds and heavy rain came just after 4pm and also uprooted two trees at Ieta near the Digicel Office temporarily blocking off the road however Ieta villagers were quick to clear this road for traffic to flow again.
No damage to buildings have been reported although one or two roofing irons were removed in some buildings.

281218ALL SMALL BOATS TO ATOLLS STOPPED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

Meanwhile local boats that operate between the Atolls islands and Buka stopped operating today and will await further information from the weather office.
This was announced by the ABG Disaster and Response officer, MARTIN TSORA.
He thanked the operators for their actions saying that safety of operators and their passengers was paramount.
MR.TSORA said that their normal operation will start once the weather situation returns to normal.
He also wished the people of Bougainville belated Merry Christmas and Prosperous 2019.

281218WATAWI SAYS USE LOCAL GOVERNANCE SYSTEMS

The ABG member for Selau and Chairman of the ABG Parliamentary Committee of Referendum, JOSEPH WATAWI has called on the people of Kereaka especially the former combatants to use local governance systems to sort out their problems instead of taking the law into their own hands.
He made these comments at the reconciliation ceremony at KURAIO CATHOLIC PARISH on Wednesday this week.
MR. WATAWI said that now the former combatants have laid their arms the governance authority has returned to the chiefs and the village court system.
He called on the former combatants to work now with the chiefs to develop Kereaka for the better.
MR. WATAWI said that KEREAKA has vast untapped resources that can be developed if the people are united for development after the referendum next year.

281218 2019 A MONUMENTAL YEAR SAYS MOMIS

The ABG President Chief DR.JOHN MOMIS last week spoke a little about the future of Bougainville.
In his address to the ABG Parliament said that 2019 will be a monumental year because it will be the year that Bougainvilleans will finally get to express their view about their future political status in the referendum.
It will be the year that Bougainvilleans pride can shine through and where they can demonstrate to the world that we are mature and democratic people where the ballot box has replaced the barrel of a gun and where the will of the people prevails.
President Momis said that as the referendum approaches we must do more.
First we must continue in our efforts to reconcile the wounds of the past and once for all dispose of weapons.
He said that we must continue to speak with one voice, and we must advance the interests of the most vulnerable in our communities.

271218KAKAPETAI WANTS HIS PEOPLE TO DISTINGUISH GOOD FROM BAD

The ABG Member for TEUA, CHARLES KAKAPETAI yesterday called on his people especially his former combatants to distinguish between good and bad before taking actions that they can regret later.
Speaking at the KURAIO reconciliation, MR. KAKAPETAI called on the former fighters to really change their attitude for a better Kereaka and Bougainville as a whole.
He said that now they had surrendered their weapons he wants them to work with the chiefs and maintain order in the communities.
MR. KAKAPETAI said that after today there is no enemy so all must now work as partners to develop their community.
He said there is no need to carry knives and Grass knives to public places but use these tools in their cocoa blocks and gardens.

271218MIRIKI URGES KEREAKA TO CONTINUE THE FIGHT

The former ABG Speaker, ANDREW MIRIKI yesterday thanked the people of KEREAKA for honouring the Bougainville Peace Agreement and laying down their weapons.
Speaking at the reconciliation ceremony in KURAIO,MR. MIRIKI said that he was with the Bougainville leaders during the crisis and again during the negotiation days and was happy that KEREAKA has shown their commitment for total peace on Bougainville.
MR. MIRIKI said that what the leaders have been fighting for will definitely become a reality if the people continue to surrender weapons and reconcile with his other.
He said that the final journey does not need weapons of destruction but tough negotiations with the National Government.
The former speaker stayed on to show some historical films to the people of Kereaka last night.
