Manetai Parish was established by the early missionaries in the 1950’s and like all parishes and schools became another care centre during the Bougainville conflict.
Since the end of the Bougainville conflict nothing has changed in terms of buildings for the Primary School, the Health Centre and the Church.
The old rundown buildings still show where the early missionaries left more than sixty years ago.
Since many schools in Central, South and North Bougainville have replaced old buildings with the assistance of donor partners and the local members, MANETAI has remained the same up until today.
New Dawn FM managed to talk with a new local priest who has been trying his best to make some changes in the parish with no community support.
FR. SATSI says the only way for MANETAI to move into the future is with the youths who have shown interest in supporting the community projects in the Parish.
According to the FATHER, the old Sister’s convent has been converted to a Vocational school and many youths have been learning Carpentry and Brick making and have already built Ten Thousand Bricks to replace their church building.
Father SATSI says the first students from their vocational school will graduate next year.
He said their plan is to replace the church building, build a multipurpose youth building for conferences and other community activities and slowly replace these old missionaries buildings with modern buildings.
