MEMBER FOR South Bougainville, Hon. Timothy Masiu has thanked the people and Government of Australia for providing K4.8 million towards the upgrading and sealing of Buin town roads.
The Autonomous Bougainville Government’s Department of Technical Services announced that the Australian Government through AusAID has awarded the K4.8 million contract for the Buin town road sealing project, which will improve roads that connect Buin High School government offices, shops and residences of Buin.
It will also contribute to a safer and more reliable road network for the people of Bougainville.
Expressing his gratitude, Mr Masiu said he was very happy indeed because the road upgrading and sealing is a boost to the development of the town and the beginning of tangible changes that is taking place in this part of Bougainville region.
“I am happy indeed because it’s a major boost to the development of the town which is the headquarters of South Bougainville,” Member Masiu said.
He added: “For many years South Bougainville has not seen any major development in terms of infrastructure that is why I am very happy. On behalf of the people of South Bougainville I thank the Australian Government and the people of Australia for this timely assistance which will complement what I am doing here to maintain and upgrade feeder roads in the whole of South Bougainville,” said a happy Mr Masiu.
Member Masiu appealed to business houses in Buin town to ride on this development to diversify business and venture into new areas as well as build new buildings that will change the face of Buin town, and called on PNG Power to take serious steps to establish operations and provide better and consistent power supply in Buin town.
He said if there was anything issues to be ironed out, PNG Power must come down and see what was wrong and take remedial measures.
Member Masiu said the announcement of the Buin town road sealing contract complements major road sealing works on the Kangu to Toimanapu Road which is a national government funded programme.
“I am delighted and proud that the people of South Bougainville have strived for change for a long time and for Australia to appreciate that is something I and my people are very thankful and proud of.”
Mr Masiu however called on the Australian Government to seal all the Buin town roads because they are all important to business and economic growth of Buin town.
He said he is looking forward to working closely with the contractor and appealed to the people of Buin town to support the company when it begins work.
