310510 MINISTER OUTSTED
By Aloysius Laukai
Another ABG Minister has lost his seat in South Bougainville.
The Minister for Local Level Government, JONATHAN NGATI lost his Motuna Huyono/Tokunutui seat to MR. ALBERT PUNGHAU who polled 1201 to win this seat.
He was declared at 5am this morning.
MR. PUNGHAU is currently the member of the Papua New Guinea Cocoa Industry Board representing Bougainville.
Counting in South Bougainville is concentrating on the individual seats before it counts the regional seat for women and ex combatants and the Presidential seat.
Counting is now on the last Siwai seat Kopii before they count the last remaining four seats in Buin.
We will give the results of the Kopii seat shortly.
Latest on the Presidential seat
Robert Atsir 2103, John Momis 15,112, James Tanis 9,551,Reuben Siara 2387,
Martin Miriori 2332, Sylveter Niu 423 and Magdalen Toroansi 1421
Counting in Buka has crossed the Buka Passes.
Now they are on Count one for the Selau seat, they have only six boxes ans already on the second one.
After Selau counters will move straight to Haku constituency.
We will post some figures once they are on the board.
@ Mupson – take a good long look at your post. It doesn’t make sense. You are all over the place. Obviously you must be one that’s still going through “complexities of the crisis”.
“Bougainville a breeding ground for cargo cultists?”. That’s a very strong statement to make considering the calibre of people that have been posting to this site since its inception. It seems quite absurd having you writing on a blog that belongs to bougainvilleans, if I may say..
On Kabui & Ona, rest assured the crisis is but a thing of the past now. It will never happen again. Whoever started it, is of no issue considering we took part in it one way or another. It’s time to move on. It’s time to forgive and forget. Considering the lack of resources on the part of the Law & n Order sector and NGO agencies that deal with trauma and conflict resolution, the responsibility falls on the community to play a bigger role in helping to curb the rhetoric that’s still going on. Politics will not help here and there are real world experiences (and documented research) that tell you that Politics in this kind of situation doesn’t work.
Peukatu’s suggestion for strong armed police intervention is a viable option that has been floated around by many. Lets give the families and elders in the community the chance to fix it first...Mirahu

The problem at Mihero is a law & order issue.Punghau has been a long time working with the Chiefs but to no success. I hope Ngati & Punghau can burry their pride and continue working.Ngati has the skills at council of elders level. He is good.
Otherwise, the best is giving the upper hand to police and let the long arm of the law fix them.

@ Joshua, you are talking about different cattle & fish. Many of us are softies. The crisis has come about because the stands of the likes of Ona & Kabui.
Let me remind you the guns issue is still a potical issue. The referendum is still a dream, only time will tell in 2015.
Some of the crisis kids are still caught in the complexities of the crisis, mentally affected. some have gone to school and education has helped, some have turned to religion and God has changed them.
Some are saying nogut PNG wok long giamanim yumi.
So lets hope with Momis(if he wins) with his philosphical speeches he can influence. If Tanis wins he can keep trying.

Punghau carries some hope. Lets not write him off. Many of us in Motuna supported him much earlier when he made his intentions, but he never showed his courage to come and campaign.
Ngati is worn out already dealing with the issues in Motuna. He had his opportunties, failures and successes. Lets try new strategies & approaches with Chiefs again. Ngati traim, traim na em taim bilong Punghau with the ABG govt.
Bougainville is a breeding ground for cargo cultists - yupela save.

I think the real issues here is that some people here have not taken Mr. Punghau's win too well. If you are one of those, go bury your head in shame. The people have spoken.
By the same token, there seems to be a problems with youngsters from the area from which Mr. Punghau comes from. Now since he has decided to put himself to be a leader, let him show responsibility as well and play a part as a catalyst at least, to help resolving it..with the help local community in the area of course.
He deserves to be supported too by everyone in his constituency.

Politics has given ample time to the Guns Disposal issue. Under the UN sanctioned Peace Agreement all guns were supposed to have gone five years ago. Why they are still there baffles a lot of peace loving Bougainvilleans. Political leaders can do so much if communities continue to allow it be part of their daily lives. If communities are genuine about peace and harmony within their precincts, they must show leadership and take responsibility themselves to get rid of them.
Politics is a complete waste of time..ineffective in resolving such social issues such as guns in the community. They in fact might bring in more guns. Ol wantok yumi wanwan mas lukluk lo stretim ol liklik hap ples blo yumi yet na noken wetim President or member lo kam na stretim....

I wouldn't agree more with you, Joshua. Some of us do not support Mr. Punghau. All we can do is hope he plays a be part though in curbing the riffraff in his area which is being put out here. Its is far, far more effective for communities to resolve problems locally. That is the our traditional ways work and still can be very effective today. Politics is a fad - here today and gone tomorrow.

@Taako Read my comments to Mupson.
..and if I may add since you want to talk about Independence.... True independence is about you being able to face up to adversity...and it doesn't start from the top. It starts from within you as a person, and than to your local community, and than extends external of your community. You will be fooling yourself if you think it works that other way around. We all strive for a more Independent Bougainville..but look at your own local constituency..esp those that still carry guns...What is the issue there when the real enemy has packed and left with their tails between their legs? Nogut yumi painim wok tasol nau, laga????
Posted by: Joshua | 01 June 2010 at 01:34 PM
@Mupson - Again why do you make this a political issue when you can resolve it locally? What do you expect the politician to do? If North Bougainville can get rid of guns in their communities, just like that, why can't we do the same. What is so hard about the community standing up and telling the youngsters to throw away the guns. Dont' try and be like many of who want to make a simple problem become complex by getting anyone, everybody to be part of it. I just hope this is not another ploy at trying to get politicians to find money for disarmament. Enough is enough. Show your own respect for your own community by doing the right thing first. Some of us did not vote politicians to waste their time on something that communities can do them selves. We want a real change in our quality of life - real developments. The world has moved on, so should you !!

We hope that the newly elected member for Motuna/Huyono/Tokunutui constituency will bring some better development to his area and remove those behaviours by the culprits in his own area...stretim yu yet na bring in some new changes laga....Mr.Albert Punghau..

Tom Kathoa, don't preach to us about Kaputin. We have our brand of leaders and rising from the ashes of crisis. Bougainville will continue to be path finders and trend setters in PNG.
Gazeller Restoration Authority has mortgaged the whole of PNG with all the development fundings there. And East New Britain is begging for Autonomy.
We don't want to be patronised.
Write something about the famous Lee Kuan of Singapore(founding president) or the likes of Martin Luther who fought against racial discrimination in US.

Who is the winner for the Ramu Seat in Sth B'ville ?
Posted by: Huru | 01 June 2010 at 08:34 AM
New members are coming in. Some leaders who had demised the ABG with anti social behaviours are pushed out. This shows people are demanding leaders to show integrity, moral standing and dignity.

Great job, New Dawn!

The main factor behind the weapons issue is the mindset and attitude of those who are involved in whatever conflicts.
Posted by: Chen | 31 May 2010 at 05:16 PM
Indeed, gun disposal is a political issue just like Independence for Bougainville.
Posted by: Taako | 31 May 2010 at 05:00 PM
The gun issue is still a big problem in B/ville and contributor to social issues.
Chiefs are powerless when guns around around,. Guns causes intimidation, fear, rule of law is absent, and off course Guns Disposal is a political issue.

Wonderful job New Dawn- keep up the good work,

The problem with a lot of us is that we tend to push social problems to the politicians. Social problems are community problems and therefore should be solved by the community collectively. In a traditional oriented society like ours, the village elders still are the better ones to lead and not politicians...mirau

Motuna Huyono, the mandate has been given to Albert Punghau. In Motuna we had too many Indian chiefs - Patrick Meura, Nosuri,Sukina, Luke Deukari and Musu. You split all the Motuna votes to allow Punghau pick votes.
Punghau the baton is with you, no one agenda is to fix your notorious Mihero youngesters.
