The
people of Bougainville have commemorated National Disability Day with disabled
persons making sign languages at the start of the celebrations.
The
celebrations included singing, reading sign language and sports for the disabled.
Everlyn
Mosanga told participants there are three stages in which a child can develop a
disability.
One,
in the mother’s womb if the mother does not have a balanced diet, does not seek
medical services when pregnant, drinks alcohol or is beaten by her husband when
pregnant.
Two,
if the mother delivers her baby at home without medical attention.
Three,
if there are accidents, fights or violence when under the influence of liquor
or drugs.
Ms
Mosanga from the CALANG Service said many disabled people were good able people,
but became disabled through accidents and other avoidable causes.
She
said when many people get malaria they treat themselves with Panadol instead of
seeking proper treatment at the hospital or village clinics.
