Women in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville have been asked to contest seats against their male counterparts at next year’s provincial election.
The challenge was issued by the ABG President James Tanis when he opened a workshop for women of the Northern Region at Tarlena last week.
Mr Tanis told participants not to concentrate only on the Reserve Seat for women but to compete with men for the open seats.
In this way women can have a bigger say in the ABG House of Representatives if they are successful.
The Bougainville constitution allows for three seats reserved for women in the three regions of Bougainville.
Meanwhile, the PNG national government is still trying to get support of members for three women to be nominated to add to the only female Member of Parliament, Minister for Women Affairs, Lady Carol Kidu.
